Production Prototypes

This gallery features pre-production examples of toys which made it through the developmental process and were eventually sold in retail stores. There is literally an endless variety of prototypes to collect, pre-production material of some sort being available for nearly every toy that Kenner ever released. Unquestionably, the most popular prototypes are those of the action figures, many of which are shown here. Figures are created from an original wax or acetate sculpting and they are first reproduced as a hardcopy. Hardcopies can be found ranging from rough unassembled versions to finished and handpainted samples. From the hard copy, the steel production molds are made and the first figures to be molded are called first shots. First shots can be both painted or unpainted but the defining feature is the lack the copyright markings on the legs.
