The Meaning of "Reseal"

One of the major online discussion that took place in 2005 had to do with reseals, and just how to define them. Basically, the controversy started when a mint on card Greedo was placed on a popular auction site, and won by a collector. The item description for the Greedo read as follows:

"One , 20-back Greedo with the Boba Fett special offer ..... on a Canadian/Kenner package MOC. Hanger is unpuched. Card is very crisp on the front / the back does have some shelf wear at various places(please see photo)... not too bad. The bubble looks to be factory sealed(waffle pattern all the way around the bubble- indicative of Kenner style factory sealing) , however on the bottom right corner/edge- there is a area about 1"X1" that someone glued(visable glue on card) a piece of litho on to the cardboard( possibly to cover up a ripped area)- please see last photo. Photo's are of the actual piece being offered here on auction. Bubble does not have any dents/cracks/lifting/yellowing. I recieved this piece from a Canadian source , and have never seen another CDN Fett offer Greedo , ever. Greedo will be shipped very well, and packaged in a Star Case."

Upon receiving the item, the buyer found that it was in fact simply a Greedo on a cut card, that had been glued onto a rarer Greedo cardback. The seller's argument was that the Greedo was mint on card (or MOC), and not a reseal, because the figure technically was still on a portion of its original card. That portion of card was simply glued to another cardback, and he made no claims about the condition of the cardback itself. A large portion of the community argued that the term "MOC" was not an appropriate term for this type of piece, and that is was in affect a reseal. The discussion took off from there, eventually involving a significant portion of the vintage community.

Eventually, the seller apologized and things quieted down. Still, for a few weeks in the summer of 2005, this was a major issue in the community. I was not even involved in it, and I still recieved a number of emails and phones calls from collectors wishing to discuss it at lenth.

It should be pointed out that this event is presented here *only* for its historical significance, and is not meant to dredge up past controversies. The purpose of this entry is not to support or defame either side, simply to discuss an interesting event in the hobby.
