Here's a closeup of the "plaster and chicken wire" construction. Although this construction would seem fragile, the set has weathered exposure to the Sahara remarkably well.
We literally could have driven our Clio through downtown Mos Espa. Parking was not hard to find, and it's not metered.
A German magazine published some mats which indicate that there at one time more prequel sets constructed nearby. Those sets, unlike Mos Espa, are now gone. This may be given to indicate that more filming is planned on this set.
This image shows yet another of those mysterious columns. We spent quite a lot of videotape filming Mos Espa. The place seemed to lend itself to Lucas-like slow, panning shots.
