Most Underated/Overrated Pieces?

I'm curious to here some of this group's opinions on which vintage pieces are
the most underrated and which are the most overrated, as evidenced by price

Some quick thoughts of mine on some non-"big ticket" items that I believe to
be underrated and those which I believe to be overrated:

Underrated: POTF85 C9+ or better carded Chewbacca, POTF85 C9+ or better
carded Chewbacca, R2-D2 w/pop-up lightsaber, C9+/C10 Blue Snag (interest
seems to have dwindled for this figure recently),

Overrated: Imperial Gunner, Luke Stormtrooper in any form, Imperial Shuttle
complete C8 or better, A-Wing, EV-9D9, Han Solo Carbonite, Leia Poncho, junk
Tatooine Skiffs (which seem to always fetch a pretty penny regardless of their
completeness/condition), Yak Face, Blue Snaggletooth C9 or under, DROIDS C-3PO
loose or carded

I don't have a snag nor the cantina. The reason I've held off on Snag
is I'm thinking about going for a sealed cantina. I know that would
cost a bundle, but I'd get the Snag and get one of the things that all
my friends had, but I didn't. Yup, they all had Blue Snags. In fact,
we had more Blue snags than hammerheads combined. :/

I recently got a good price on the R2 pop-up. He is certainly a fun
figure.

But for underrated, I kinda wonder if the Die Cast Micro Collection toys
might fall into that category. I actually haven't bought them (other
than my build your armies pack). But they are certainly something I
think would be great to always have.

I always thought the ISP-6 should command more.

Leia Poncho. She isn't too hard to find. And loose her price is
reasonable, but carded (not mint even) she seems to jump up quite a
bit. C9 or less blue snags do command prices that astound me at times.
"What? You are charging $175 for a Blue Snag with loose limbs and blue
toes?" And I've been looking for a droids C-3PO loose. He is either
impossible to find, or priced such that the carded one is often cheaper!

I also am surprised at the price of the One Man Sand Skimmer. :(

Generally I think I agree with your choices.

I can't argue with the chewbacca, that's a pretty difficult figure to find on
the potf card and for that matter so is: Ben Kenobi, Luke x-wing, Vader and
the Biker Scout. All of these seem much more difficult imo than the standard
POTF issues or the the run of the mill reissues like the leia poncho.

ALmost everything, patricularly the luke in Stormtrooper , are overratted.
My only exception is the Imperial Shuttle. I have seen far less of these as of
late than I have the awing or the skiff.

here's my list:

underrated

loose: Imperial Shuttle, Darth Vader's Star Destroyer
Moc: POTF reissues like Ben, Darth, Biker and Luke X-wing, tougher to find
trilogos, early ESB figures
MIB: Imperial Shuttle, sealed Imperial Troop Transport, boxed creatures
particulatly the wampa
high end: Droids Fett, POTF Nikto and Gammorean GUard, Brazilain "Nave
Imperial",

overrated:
Loose: most potf, blue snag, Ewok Village
MOC: SW Han 12 Back, ROTJ Emperor Royal Guard ($50+???),
MIB: Skiff, A-Wing, At-At's,
High End: Yak face, 21 back Fett, Vinyl Cape Jawa

Maybe. many later issued cantinas came with the standard red snag instead of
the blue one. It would kinda suck to pay that much $ only to find out down
the road that you got a reddie. ;^)

Underrated

----Huffy Speeder Bike, I mean what a great SW kids toy, and
it was only an in store promo...Only a few hundred were made and
they sell for a few hundred.

---Remote control R2-D2, I know they are common, they just don't get
the respect they deserve.

---Trilogo Boba Fett---like the guys said a few posts ago, in my opinion
these figures I bet are a *LOT* more rare than people think..I mean I
have never seen one carded on trilogo at a show or on the net or ebay,
so that woudl probably mean the loose ones are a difficult score

---Yak Face on trilogo, it is still a tough find carded

---Cobot R2-D2, Never see them for sale, but you never see them on
"want lists" either..

OVERRATED:

---21 back Boba Fett---Sorry I just don't see it
---POTF Annakin Yak
---Most all carded figures

---Ewok Village
---SW Creature Cantina

Obviously I don't collect carded figures...

Really? When I see them they're usually priced at $1000+. And I see them quite
a bit for something that's supposed to be extremely scarce.

I definitely agree. This thing--meaning the variation figure on the Tri Logo
card--is a real toughy. But I think its underrated in terms of general
conception, not price. They don't come up for sale enough for their to be a
general "value" for this one.

My list:

Underrated:

--ESB Death Squad Commander
--Action figure hardcopies
--vintage Kenner store displays
--tougher ESB 31-backs
--Yoda 8 Ball

--Takara 8" figures
--Lili Ledi Mexican dolls
--ROTJ 48 backs
--Brazilian Glasslite vehicles
--Uzay Headman
--micro collection
--Palitoy (cardboard) Death Star
--Palitoy Droid Factory

Overrated:

--proof cards
--action figure first shots
--red cape Bib Fortuna
--white cape Bib Fortuna
--carded vintage POTF
--Canadian Sears "shrink wrap" figures
--vintage 3-Packs
--sealed playsets and vehicles
--Japanese Popy figures
--bagged figures

There has been a change in plans. Minty Blue Snag is on my 1999 list
and a mint Cantina loose is too now. :/

With the exception of the Millennium Falcon, the Micro Collection stuff is
booming, expecially for MIB, NRFB or sealed items. The Falcons way too over
rated at $400+, but lately on ebay theyve only been fetching $150-$200. :Loose
sets that are still sealed in the bag are BOOMING. I sold a wampa cave for $25
and a Generator set for $30, bascially what I could find a sealed one for if I
looked hard enough. Single figures alone are getting $5-$25 a piece which is
pretty amazing as long as theyre sealed in the bag. The snowspeeder was at a
high a few years ago, dropped, but is on the steady rise. No one really
realizes that the JC Penny exclusive is tough to find in nice shape.

Maybe you have had better luck than myself but I have had a c8.5 sealed
Snowspeeder for close to a year and I haven't been able to sell it at $200.

Leia orig. white gown on ROTJ card (some may put this on their overrated list,
but they obviously havent ever tried to track one down before)
ESB R5D4, Hammerhead, WalrusMan, Greedo,Power Droid, and Snaggletooth
POTF Wicket and Teebo (tough to find)
POTF Gammorean Guard (much more reasonable than the other 2 Aussies)
unpainted vintage Micro figures (plentiful but still underpriced)
original Kenner patches
any loose vintage 12"
BendEms (Fett and Luke X-wing are impossible)

overrated:
proof cards
vintage 3 packs (I know they're tough, but damn!!)
newer 12" exclusives
loose vintage bootlegs (I like 'em too, but way too pricey)
most loose POTF (especially A-wing pilot and the Ewoks)

Let me just preface this list by saying that I only collect loose figures and
POTF coins.

Underrated:
Brown hair Tatooine Luke
MINT Blue Snag
MINT Death Star Droid
MINT R5-D4
DROIDS R2-D2 & C-3P0 (do these ever turn up on the newsgroup or Ebay?)
Tri-Logo gray Boba Fett (actively searching for this one for over 8 months)

Overrated:
Early Bird figures
Rebo Band
Rancor
Luke Jedi (blue or green saber)
Any other condition Blue Snag
All POTF figs
AT/AT
All Class IV/V coins

I think vinyl cape Jawas are a special case. They are listed in price guides
for up to $300, but I have never seen them sell for more than $125-150. It
seems that people have a very hard time recognizing legitimate ones and are
leary of spending the money.

It's a case of being both underrated and overrated at the same time.

Man, they may be overated but theyre bitches to find. Ive NEVER seen a Kenneg
bagged Leia Bespin, any of the POTF with the excpetion of the Jabba Dungeon
figures, R5-D4, or quite a bit more. They may be somewhat easy to fake, but
even fakes are hard to find. The prices on em arent too high, some sell for
loose price while theyre a hundred times harder to find then their packaged
counterparts.

This is a great thread idea!

Under: 20/21 backs of first 12 figures (not as rare as a 12-back but they are
bargins compared to 12backs and look just as cool) POTF Yoda (I've only seen
one) Tri-logo Anakin (not rare but this figure was not offically released MOC
in the USA which makes it a cool addition to any collection) Tri-logo Yak
(great sub for the POTF one, yet still quite rare) Droids/Ewok coins
(probably less of these than the silver coins)

Over:
All of the potf85 wave figures, loose or carded.
Skiff
A-wing
all common loose toys are overpriced IMO
Double telescope Luke

My overrated list wasn't based exclusively on price/availability; a lot of it
has to do with what I feel is fairly uninteresting. For instance, I would say
that those Canadian Sears figures are overrated, even though I know there are
only one or two examples of some variations known to be out there. I just don't
think they're cool enough to warrant spending $3k on one.

As far as bagged figures go, I just don't see them as being a whole lot
different than loose ones. They're ok, and I have a few bagged figures, but I
definitely think that people make a bigger fuss over them than is warranted.
Particularly since you can re-seal bags with ease.

I think the reason people like bagged figures( I know this is my reason)
is because you are -usually- getting a dead mint figure. For those of
us that would rather not open a carded figure, bagged seems to be the
best route for getting a c10 mint figure. I do, however, think that
dealers in particular make a big fuss over the fact that something is
bagged. I don't know how many times I've seen an 8d8 bagged with a
price tag of $20 and just walked away from it.

BTW, if any of you have bagged figures that you would like to sell,
please email me.

Yeah, that makes sense.

What I find a little--dare I use the word?--silly, is that a bagged figure is
often seen as being, in a way, packaged, and thus worth more, yet, due its
lacking any graphics, etc., it lacks most of what packaging is usually desired
for.

That's not to say that I don't want some figures bagged, mind you. If, for
instance, I was to buy a "new in box" playset that was supposed to come with
figures, I would want the figures to still be bagged. Ditto for mail away and
multi-pack figures. But that's just because I'm being anal :^)
