First off a question: Did Kenner make commericals for POTF85?

2nd I'm interested in getting 1983-85 Star Wars commericals. To trade I have
tons of 78-82 commericals, 9 orginal 70s-80s theatrical trailers, 60s and 80s
GI Joe commericals, Hardware Wars, Holiday Special and Droids cartoons. Email
me at wood...@islandnet.com with what you got!

I'm also looking for 80s transformers commericals and I'm looking for a copy
of the commerical for the first issue of the Marvel GI JOE comic book.

I certainly never saw one. I remember seeing those figures in stores and being
totally shocked that they were out. I'd be curious to hear what others recall
regarding this.

One thing to keep in mind is that at Toy Fair, commercials are usually screened
for buyers as a way of demonstrating the merchanidising oomph that the toy
maker plans on putting behind its products. This is true of today's Kenner
(Hasbro), and I've been told by ex-employees that this was done back in the
70s/80s as well. So its more than likely that some type of POTF spot was
screened at Toy Fair, even if it was never actually used on air.

Does anyone recall a commercial for the Early Bird Envelope in late '77?
Someone (Gus, I believe) swears that he saw this, but its not on any of the
frequently-circulated tapes, as far as I know.

I seem to remember a commercial for the EB kit and Boba mail-in offer, but
since those commercials haven't turned up, I trust my memory as much as I
trust people's recollections of receiving a rocket-firing Boba in the
mail. :^)

There was some advertising about the EB package, because I knew to look
for it before it was in stores. Same goes with the Boba Fett offer,
because I vividly remember non-SW fans asking me about the character in
1979 in reference to the action figure--they had to find out somewhere.
The problem relying on those Kenner commcercial tapes for validating this
is that all commcercials in circulation today originate from either the
two Kenner tapes within the company and one commercial that aired during
the Holiday Special. So, if the sample size were larger, it would say
more about whether those commercials were likely to exist.

I've seen print ads that were cut out of newspapers and saved. Given the real
event that Kenner's *finally* making Star Wars toys was, and the fact that
the whole EB kit thing was aimed at Xmas consumers, I can't think of a good
reason why an EB television spot would not have been made. But then, I don't
know much about how commercials are made, distributed and aired, either now
or back then...

I don't remember if they advertised for the figures themselves, but I
clearly remember one with the coins. It was something like a bunch of coins
floating around a neighborhood or something crazy like that. Was that for
the coin mailaway offer or for POTF figures w/coins I don't remember.

I heard about the dancing coins commercial from other collectors also.

Yeah, I remember this one too. Something like "You've never seen anything like
it!". The coins were chasing the kids around the neighborhood if my memory serves
me well. Kinda creepy.

Actually I *do* remember commericals advertising the 1985 figures with
the coins. The Imperial Gunner, Luke Stormtrooper, and one other figure
were highlighted.

Unfortunately, I don't remember too many POTF85 figures making it to the
stores I visited in Houston. :(

Yes, we definitely knew exactly what to ask mom to buy us for Christmas.

"You want that flimsy cardboard thing? And it costs how much?"

I firmly believe there was one, not for the "kit" itself, but for
the mail-away portion for the first 4 figures. I vividly remember this
because when I went to look for the mail-in coupon "available in stores" I
could not find it. Hailing from Canada, we get many U.S. stations, and
many of the cartoons I watched in the late 1970's were on American
stations, hence, we would receive the U.S. commercials. Much to my
chagrin, Canada did not get the Early Bird Kit (if we did, I certainly
didn't see it). I went through store after store trying to find it - to no
avail. The commercial showed the 4 figures and described how to mail in to
get them.

As for the Boba Fett mail-in, it exists too. The commercial shows
the new "wave" of figures for 1979, as well as details on how to mail-in
the POPs and receive Boba Fett. The figure is shown as well as a boy
cutting out the POPs with the cardbacks lying on a table.
