| Concept Model for Large-Size Boba Fett Action Figure (Kenner File Photos) | |
| This photo, from the 1979 wholesale catalog published by Irwin Toys, shows the conceptual model representing the large-size Boba Fett action figure. This was the earliest three-dimensional prototype for the figure. At the time it was made, the product included a range of features that didn't carry over to the produced toy, such as a firing rocket and electronics.
See here for a later prototype, one much closer to the finished toy, but apparently retaining the cancelled features. See here for an internal Kenner "spec sheet" devoted to the figure, which provides additional information regarding its planned features. As discussed here, the presence of a photo of this model on Kenner store displays intended to promote the small-size action figure suggests that the model for the large-size figure predates its smaller counterpart. The lower two of the three photos featured above show what appears to be this same model with a different paint scheme. While the coloration is much closer to that featured on the production figure, the model's helmet includes the "eyes" on its crest, a detail characteristic of Lucasfilm's early Boba Fett costumes. So it appears that this model, like it's 3.75" counterpart, was repainted several times, as the design for Boba Fett evolved. The stand on which the figure is posed, fashioned after an ancient Greek temple, turned up again at Toy Fair 1979. See here for more details. As the photos featured here almost certainly predate Toy Fair 1979, it suggests the temple diorama was created and used prior to the industry show, perhaps in late 1978. As of 2025, the model has not been located by collectors. |
