Reproduction
The term reproduction refers to anything made by someone that is meant to look
identical to a produced piece. Various reproductions exist in the hobby such as
double-telescoping lightsabers, bubbles for cardbacks, and the most common by
far-- weapons and accessories. Reproductions, often times called repros, have
their good and bad sides to them. On the one hand, they serve as an alternative
for people who might not otherwise be able to afford a certain item (for
example, a double-telescoping saber). On the other hand, repros introduce a
whole host of problems. For one thing, they dilute the appeal or collectible
value of originals. They also make it difficult for people to distinguish real
pieces from repros (a particular problem for vintage weapons/guns).
The term reproduction is sometimes interchangeable with custom. However, reproduction has more of a negative connotation to it.
