John Mollo's costume design sketchbook for Star Wars | |
John Mollo did the ground-breaking costume design for Star Wars in 1977, winning the Oscar the following year in that category. Five years later he would also go on to win an Oscar for Costume Design for Gandhi. This is John Mollo's personal sketchbook for Star Wars A New Hope he used from April 1975 through July 1976. The book contains specifications for the costumes, schedules, notes from various meetings with George Lucas, and even other sketches for films he worked on before and after Star Wars. Most importantly, he used this sketchbook to capture his Star Wars costume designs from initial ideas through final concepts for such iconic characters as Darth Vader, Ben Kenobi, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Grand Moff Tarkin, Chewbacca, Stormtrooper, TIE Pilot, Imperial Gunner, Cantina and Mos Eisley aliens, Jawa, Rebel General, X-Wing Pilot, Rebel Soldier, Yavin ceremonial costumes, etc. I consider this almost like a historical document for Star Wars, as this is where a critical part of the look of the film (and the entire film franchise) was first established. |
