Hoth Matte Painting
There are relatively few matte paintings from the Star Wars movies in private collections. This is a rare example from The Empire Strikes Back. It is a large canvas painting used in the special effects shots for the Hoth battle where miniatures of the AT-AT walkers and Snowspeeders were filmed using stop motion animation in the foreground. What is a brilliant about the painting is that it has an almost Impressionist where up close the mountain scenery is blurry, but far away it is sharp like a photograph. This creates the proper illusion for filming the scene where closeups have the depth of field for blurred background, and wide angles are sharp and in focus.
