Unproduced Obi-Wan Puzzle Mock-Up | |
This is a hand-drawn conceptual Obi-Wan puzzle mock-up, which was probably done very early on while Kenner was rushing to get Star Wars product on store shelves. Some of the first Kenner branded items released were puzzles, so it's interesting to see pieces like this, since they could have been some of the earliest work done by the company on their new brand.
Unlike the R2 and Jawa mock-ups which also turned up, this example makes note of the fact that the puzzle has "63 Extra Large Pieces." To the best of my knowledge, no vintage puzzles were released with such a small number of pieces, which means that these could have been concepts for a puzzle line designed for younger fans. It's also neat to see the different layout for "Star Wars," in that on the production puzzle boxes, the name was not made a part of the classic racetrack border, as is seen here. According to Sean, the puzzle appears to be made by "taking an existing puzzle (not sure which line), and using black tape, cutting out Star Wars logos, and integrating cardboard with the Obi-Wan image all pieced together." |
