Unlicensed Plaster Wall Plaques (Set 2) | |
These items comprise the only set of these wall plaques that I've ever seen. The sculpting is quite stylized and has a real '70s vibe to it. Design-wise, these pieces seem related to whatever '70s impulse was responsible for groovtastic bubble fonts and outré customized van decor. The Vader you see above has a great flowiness to it, particularly in the areas of the cape and helmet. It appears that Vader was originally intended to be clutching a lightsaber; absent the weapon he looks a bit like he's pounding his chest for emphasis, à la Celine Dion or a really clichéd Shakespearean actor.
The Chewie is even better. In fact, this is one of my absolute favorite renditions of the character. First of all, his facial expression is great; he looks stoned or at least on the verge of saying the wookiee version of "far out, man!" And the pose, which has the Chewster leaning back as he grasps that weird space doohickey, imbues him with a vibe that screams, "Don't bother me now, brother, 'cause I'm groovin' out." That combined with the odd base makes him look like he's nobly surfing through the galaxy on some great intergalactic space turd.
When I showed this item during one of my Star Wars Celebration presentations, I compared the C-3PO to Homer Simpson. The likeness is uncanny. Check out our special feature on unlicensed ceramics here. |
