Unproduced Return of the Jedi buttons proof sheet
It is always a treat to find prototypes for items that were never released for retail sale, especially for something that was previously known to have been considered. Licensee Adam Joseph released a set of 12 photo buttons in 1983, but this proof sheet is the first evidence I have seen that a different selection of photo scenes was originally proposed.

As can be seen in the second photo comparing the proof sheet to the released button set, only the Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Jabba the Hutt, and rebel heroes on Endor buttons were released as shown on the proof sheet. A different photo was used on the final version for Max Rebo, and the other seven buttons are unique images. I purchased this set from the original printer, but he did not know anything about the reason for the change in images. Based on the overlap of images between the proof and the released buttons, it seems fairly clear this was an earlier version rather than a proposed second series, but omissions like Boba from the final release are bit surprising, since his popularity was fairly well established even in the 80s. Surprising finds like this are part of what keeps collecting exciting!
