Dutch R2-D2

Many of you are familiar with the Dutch bootlegs featured in our bootleg gallery. This R2-D2 hails from that series of Dutch bootlegs.

Here is a nice shot of the back. As you can see the elusive gold string is still attached. Many not only lack the string but the small loop the string is threaded through so it's nice to see a complete one.

For years there were thought to only be 4 figures in the set; Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, C-3PO, and Chewbacca. However, one of these turned up on a popular auction site a few years ago and the look made many bootleg collectors instantly think of this set. The size, style, material, and inclusion of a head loop really helped prove the case. It was finally a closed case when a near complete set of these figures turned up in Australia and the R2 was included with them. It's not every day that new figures are found for what are thought to be complete sets but this R2 was a welcome find. Much like the others a 2" version has also been found. This is one of the scarcest figures from the set, second only to the Chewbacca. Of the coolest features of this figure is the inclusion of "arms".

These figures are thought to be some of the earliest bootlegs to have been made. It's been long thought that they may have been based on cenceptual drawings *before* the movie was released. This would account for the "arms". An angled shot may have been all that was seen and the legs may have been mistaken for arms and feet.
