Lionel 1977 Seasons Greetings Box Car | |
This box car is a Christmas item from Lionel from 1977. This train car is unusual as it depicts R2-D2 on the front as 1977 was the groundbreaking year that Star Wars was introduced to the world. This uncataloged item was produced in very limited numbers. Lionel was one of the early licensees of Star Wars toys with the "Duel at Death Star" electric car racing set.
The second photo affords a glimpse of the toy outside of its windowbox packaging.
Given the remarkable rarity of the boxed train itself, it's not difficult to grasp the rarity of this, the original outer carton.
The above photo shows a letter included within, which indicates this train was offered to dealers as a holiday thank you for supporting the company throughout the year. It's quite possible the train was also given to employees although likely not produced exclusively for them.
Finally, we see the letter itself. Special thanks to Peter Strauss for sharing these additional images! |
