1978 German Volksmarch Award Medal | |
This unusual unlicensed medal was awarded as a prize in a Volksmarch, or hike, taking place in Herbornseelbach, Germany in 1978. It's possible this Volksmarch was arranged by the U.S. Army, who had a base in Herbornseelbach, and may have even been awarded to Army personnel (it was purchased in Wisconsin). The red, white, and blue ribbon seems to suggest an American connection.
This rather elaborate award, which is made of bronze, exhibits some whimsy on the part of the sculptor, with Darth's arm around an Imperial trooper who in turn is lifting a mug of beer (another end-of-trail tradition of Volksmarching). Nothing like a good brisk hike through the countryside to bring Dark Lords and Imperial minions together. The Jawa appears to be holding a sparkler. Even the trapezoid-like shape suggests the angular look of the Death Star interiors seen in A New Hope -- clearly, the creator was familiar with the film's Imperial aesthetic. Measures about 5 inches tall, including ribbon and pin clasp. |
