R2-D2 Bootleg Brass Belt Buckle | |
A series of brass belt buckles, including this one which spells out "R2D2", was produced in 1977 or 78 without a manufacturer's mark.
However, a nearly identical series that used the same letter fonts and possessed nearly identical markings on the reverse were produced by Baron Buckles in 1978. From the comparison images above, it becomes pretty evident that Baron produced these bootleg buckles -- Note the similar "R" in the R2D2 and "Race" buckles, and the identical "Solid Brass Taiwan R.O.C." markings on the reverse. Even the serial numbers stamped at bottom appear to use the same number punch dies. The R2 buckle is numbered 4241 ("Race" is 4343 and is dated 1978). There is also a C-3PO buckle (4238) and Star Wars logo buckle (4240) in this unlicensed set, forcing one to wonder if there is a fourth buckle numbered 4239 (possibly "Darth Vader"?). Buckle measures approximately 2x3 inches. |
