Original Artwork for Unproduced Sonic Land Speeder Sticker Sheet | |
Shown here is a relatively interesting pre-production piece from the development of Kenner's Sonic Controlled Land Speeder. Originally a JC Penny exclusive toy, this vehicle was one of the first offered in late 1978 as part of Kenner's Star Wars vehicle line. Kenner put quite a bit of work into the design of the piece. Originally the sections on the dashboard around the "On" and "Off" button were going to be an applied sticker rather than the raised plastic designs found on the production piece. The artwork for the sticker sections was originally done at a scale of two times the size. The artwork itself is in a presentation folder done by a vendor outside of Kenner (seen above with the folder down). Notations on the cardboard presentation sleeve note the designer as well as the pantone color used. A hand written note states\"Please try to tint brown background towards pantone 201 (more red)." A note originally accompanying the artwork order notes the dimensions of the toy as well as the contours of the section where the stickers would be applied. The order includes notes for four different stickers; two around the switch and one for each side of the dashboard done at a "2-4 up." This unproduced artwork provides an interesting view into the production of Kenner's first Star Wars vehicles. These pieces date to May 1978, well into Kenner's strong effort to provide new toys to the market. |
