John Kellerman has what is probably the most comprehensive collection of Kenner store displays on the planet. It includes just about everything, from production pieces to prototypes. And this piece has to be one of the jewels of the collection. Originally intended to be released in 1981 (an early version of it appeared in the 1981 Toy Fair catalog), it never did make it to retailers' toy aisles. As you can tell from these photos, it's double-sided, with a different image on each side. It's a paste-up with some hand-applied paint added to its edges.
This is the opposite side. I really love the colors of the ESB freeze-chamber scene, and they look great on this display piece. It's a great piece and it's a shame it was never released. This is the only known example. |
