| Kenner 1985 Theater Promotion Cup | |
| These waxed paper cups were given away at theaters during the 1985 re-release of Return of the Jedi. They are part of a Kenner-sponsored promotion which placed an emphasis on their ROTJ and POTF toy lines. The cup is of primary interest to toy collectors, as it features line art of several POTF figures (at the cup's top), and simplified renditions of many Kenner vehicles, the composition of which, interestingly, was taken directly from a large Kenner store display of the time. It is also interesting to note the use at the cup's top of the decorative border motif featured in the 1985 Kenner Toy Fair catalog.
The bottoms of these cups had game pieces stuck to them, the gist of the whole promotion being a sweepstakes. Apparently, the grand prize was a complete Kenner toy collection, first prize a ride-on speeder bike toy, second prize a Kenner action figure, and third prize a ROTJ poster. These days, most cups are missing their game pieces, making examples with in-tact pieces a little more desirable. |
