| R2-D2 Preliminary Coin Art | |
| This sketch for the R2-D2 coin exhibits some important differences when compared with the coin that was eventually produced. For one thing, a sandy landscape appears below the feet of R2 on the coin. For another, the Death Star seen at the right of the composition was changed to the unfinished space station seen in Return of the Jedi once this design made it into aluminum. Thirdly, the X-Wings on the coin are not placed on one side of the character image as they are in the sketch; rather, they flank the droid, flying out from behind it in opposite directions. Lastly, as they were in the case of the Luke X-Wing design, the ringed planets seen in the sketch were elminated before the coin went into production.
