Revenge of the Jedi "Error" Card | |
The last card to complete the set of 50 Revenge cards is commonly referred to as the "template card" but that is a mis-nomer. Actually it's more of an error card or mis-strike. It's basically a totally white card with a perforated hanger hole. The Revenge logo is cleanly and correctly printed. The typeface for the special offer is double-printed and offset the second time so that it appears as a blur. What looks like the nameplate area is actually the remnants of the masking used on Empire Strikes Back cards. Unlike Kenner ROTJ, the ESB logo had "Star" and "Wars" split over and under the new movie logo. This white area is where the word "Wars" would have been. In fact, the TM symbol is to the right of that space, just like on the ESB Kenner logo. The large black area is what they would have printed the character image onto. There are a couple of areas of lighter, black printing that reside underneath the main black and don't appear to belong anywhere. The most visible one is at the bottom left corner, beneath the bubble area. The other area is where the white space is under the logo and it's actually covering 1/2 the white. The highlighting for the Kenner logo is printed in the light black instead of the normal blue. This card appears to be one of the first trials of the new Revenge of the Jedi logo and is fantastic for showing how the printing was done. For instance, isn't always apparent that a black background is printed first so that the character photograph can be printed on top of that. Though, on finished cards, you can see that this black area ends up being a narrow border for the photo separating it from the silver border around the perimeter of the card. |
