R2-D2 with Pop Up Saber Carded Sample | |
The figure you see here is an early sample piece, much like the ones you see here. In this case, a first shot figure was applied to a blister card for use at an industry show such as Toy Fair. The rips you see on the card's surface are due to its having been hung in a display of some sort; at one time, it had velcro attached to its reverse in order to affix it to a display board.
You might notice the piece looks a little weird. This is because the bubble that holds the figure has been attached to the card at a place much lower than it was on production versions. The bottom of the bubble corresponds to the bottom of the blue figure area on the card, rather than to an area much closer to the center of that same area. Here we have a closeup of the bottom of the figure itself, in which you might be able to see that it lacks production markings.
As you can see, the bubble has square corners rather than the rounded corners of the production bubbles. Quite a few production samples have such bubbles. |
