Original Art for Jabba the Hutt Play-Doh Set

This is an original painting for the Jabba the Hutt Play-Doh set made by Kenner for Return of the Jedi. This large painting was used to create the mat for the Play-Doh figures to rest on, which allows the Play-Doh pieces stay clean (and not get on rugs and furniture) and gives a decorative setting for play activity. For Kenner artwork, this is an extremely large piece -- the Senator Palpatine figure is placed at the bottom to give some sense of scale. Note that the Play-Doh logo is illustrated in the lower left corner and the Kenner Return of the Jedi logo and copyright info in the lower right.

Though not shown it is worth pointing out that there are actually two layers to this artwork. The first layer is of the soft water-color painting which is then overlayed with a sheet of clear acetate. All of the black outlines are present on this upper layer in a fashion similar to the Vlix card art.

The second image shows just what can be accomplished with custom framing. It has been said time and time again that a nice presentation can make or break a piece. Chris had this custom framed with a triple layer mat that really compliments the colors in the artwork. I think the framer did a superb job and I hope this photo can inspire others to go this route when displaying artwork.
