Original Concept Artwork for Unproduced Revised Version of the 3-D Talking Clock by Bradley | |
This is the original concept artwork for what was to be the revised version of the classic Star Wars 3-D talking clock featuring R2-D2 and C-3PO produced by Bradley Time, Inc. The size of the paper is 14" x 16" and the art appears to be magic marker and watercolor paint on drawing paper and is dated 1983. Here the artist used a copy of the original illustration as a base to do his coloring so as to retain the original work in it's line-art state. This would allow the artist to recreate coloring schemes without redrawing the piece each time. It's a particularly interesting piece because it was intended to update the original clock released years prior. This one would, of course, have a heavy Endor influence for the Return of the Jedi era.
The notes are pretty specific about the details and say the following:
I should mention that any resemblance this clock has to the movie Dr. Strangelove is purely coincidental. I think.
It's easy to see how the designer used basically the entire original clock in order to create the updated version. And not to let anything go to waste, the figures themselves look like they appeared on yet another Bradley product, the 3-D Electronic Quartz Clock
Although Texas Instruments produced the first watches made for Star Wars, Bradley Time produced most of the time pieces for the original trilogy in the 1980's. Their products included clocks and watches both analog and digital. This piece of art was used for in-house reference and is stamped:
