| Micro Collection Jabba Boiler Room Unproduced Playset | |
| This is an unproduced playset from the Micro Collection series
from the early 1980's. It is part of a larger series of playsets
that interlock to create Jabba's palace. The Boiler Room is the room
in Jabba's dungeon where EV-9D9 and 8-D8 torture rebellious droids.
The playset is made of plastic and was likely hand-made using an aluminum mold within Kenner as part of the early design stages. This view of the playset shows the familiar windows from the scene where C-3P0 and R2 and brought to the lower floors of Jabba's palace. The playset was never completed and the only Kenner file photo of the playset shows the piece in exactly the same stage of development, missing the exact same pieces. We know that pieces are missing because of the accompanying blueprints which show the additional parts. The Kenner file photo of the playset seems to be an exact match of the sample here, and is the only prototype of this playset known to exist. Photos of the Kenner file photo first appeared in the hardcover version of Tomart's Price Guide to Worldwide Star Wars Collectibles.
This view of the playset shows what appear to be some moving generator
columns in the middle plus the surface detail of the floor above the boiler
room. My guess is that the top section of the playset formed part of the
floor of the
Several figures are known to have been planned for the Boiler Room
including a sitting version of EV-9D9 and the
Power
Droid and possibly
C-3P0
and
Gammorean Guard.
From this shot you can see the connection points for spiral stairs that
connect the floors of the top and bottom levels of the playset towards
the right. It's possible these stairs were never sculpted and finished
as there are no known specimens created.
The top view gives the layout fo the playset with ventilated floor pattern
and the top section of the generator area. There's also a hidden hatch
where characters can fall through the floor. |
