R2-D2 Pie Bird | |
unlicensed, fan produced, ~3" high, unpainted. I have learned a lot about pie birds recently. Prior to that I did not know that this was a pie bird. What exactly is a pie bird you ask? Well, it is a ceramic item that is hollow in the middle with holes at the top and bottom that you put in a pie you are baking to vent steam so it bakes properly. Often they are ceramic birds (hence the name). There is some belief that this is the origin of the nursery rhyme about four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. As the steam exits the pie via the ceramic bird it often whistles. That's why many of them look like birds. I guess it works for R2 units, too. |
