| You know, I always thought action figures were fun when I was a kid, and yet I always felt they were missing....something. At the time I figured it was an extra point or two of articulation, or maybe a more complicated deco scheme. Now I realize it was nothing so mundane. All my vintage figures needed was some weight, a bit of heft, so that, should I get bored of playing Death Star or Bespin, I could pick them up and hurl them at my nearest friend, thereby causing a gaping, bleeding head wound. What's a toy if you can't use it to inflict serious head injury?
Well, while we in the States made do with those cheesy plastic figures, bootleggers in Brazil were busy producing the neat lead knock-offs you see on this page. They're fully articulated, heavy as heck and oooooh so goofy. Above you see examples of a Luke X-Wing lead figure and another of...is that Princess Leia? I guess so, though I have no clue where they got that body. The head looks like it's from the Hoth Leia figure.
Here you see two more, one of Han in his Hoth outfit, the other of plain old original Han.
Last up is a knock-off of the Rebel Commander figure, complete with a lead gun that looks like it was made by a one-armed blind hobo with one shoe and about 8 years left on his prison term. Based on this image, I take it these figures came with weapons, though they should have sold them with helmets...to protect kids from the inevitable figure-throwing incidents.
