Kenner 39000 Display Bin and Header for Action Figures - 20-Back Assortment ('Get a Free Boba Fett') | |
Though header cards, with their snappy graphics and eye-catching colors, might be considered among the "glamour pieces" of some display collections, its also nice to have a bin to match them with. Here, the 20-back header card, with its infamous rocket-firing Boba Fett promotion, is shown as part of a complete display, with its accompanying "Star Wars" bin attached to it. The most eye-catching part of the display is the offer for the new Boba Fett figure. In this case the display was printed to show the missile firing feature which eventually never made it into production however prototypes of the figure exist.
Since the firing mechanism was removed from the figure prior to production, the supporting Kenner literature and packaging had to be changed as well. This change was probably most evident between the Star Wars 20c cardback and the Star Wars 20d cardback. Even this display was changed as well because Kenner created a sticker which was added to cover the firing feature. The stickers used to cover the rocket-firing image can be found in a couple of different styles: one all black, as seen above, and one with "special offer" printed in the black area. Many of the extant examples without stickers appear to have had the stickers removed, causing a bit of damage where the adhesive tore the surface of the cardboard. It should be noted that this item wasn't a stand-alone merchandising aid; rather, it was integral to the manner in which Kenner shipped the figures to retailers, the product having shipped inside the ready-to-use display. As seen in the photo, a plastic tray was included to hold the carded figures in place. |
