Metalized TIE Pilot and Emperor's Royal Guard Figures: Many concepts and ideas were tossed around at Kenner and this was one of them. Like today's multitude of figure repaints and reuse of existing molds, Kenner decided here to vacuum-metalize parts of these two figures in hopes of selling additional product. The TIE Pilot's head/torso here is a shiny copper color while the Emperor's Royal Guard has a metallic red/pink head. These were part of a research test group, but the idea never got off the ground. Perhaps they were better off that way because it was apparent to me that this metalized TIE Pilot looked strangely similar to a Cylon Raider from Battlestar Galactica which may have meant a good dose of copyright infringement and some legal squabbles.
