POTF 93-Back Card Design: Steve Denny turned up a lot of incredible things over the years for his collection, but this had always been my favorite. It's a layout design for the 93-back Power of the Force action figure cards. The front of the card features the famous 63rd coin and coin collector's album offers.
The 63rd coin is pictured on the front of this card with an overlay image that was not present on the production 92-back POTF cards.
A really interesting aspect of this layout is that an additional transparency overlay reveals an additional non-standard POTF coin pictured on the front which resembles the Prototype Gold R2-D2 that has turned up in extremely small numbers on the secondary market. The other significant difference about the Gold R2-D2 coin (besides the color) is that it features the POTF logo on the back (instead of the SW logo as on the regular POTF R2-D2 coin). Was this gold R2-D2 coin destined to be a "64th coin" that was yet another component of the special mail-in offer? Or were some of these gold coins made only for photography for this card design? Why was a gold R2-D2 coin chosen for this card image, considering the coincidence that there are a small handful of prototypes of these gold R2s? Unfortunately, we don't know the answers to many of these questions, but one thing that is certain is that this gold R2-D2 coin has taken on more significance than thought before.
The back of the 93-back proof card includes overlays for text and graphics and introduces an image of the Yak Face figure onto the figure lineup picture. Note that the coin album and gold coin offer is featured across the bottom. For a closeup view of the 93-back design, see the large scan of the card back. The cover shows the name and information from the design firm who produced the layouts for these action figure cards.
